How it's calculated, with worked examples

Age grade % = age-standard time (seconds) / your actual time (seconds) x 100. The age standard is the published world-class time for your exact age and sex at that distance.

Example: a 45-year-old man runs the marathon in 3:15:00 (11700 seconds). The published standard for a 45-year-old man at the marathon is 2:08:39 (7719 seconds). Age grade = 7719 / 11700 x 100 = 66.0% -- Developing. His age-graded (open-equivalent) time is his actual time scaled by the open standard (2:00:35) over his age standard: 11700 x (7235 / 7719) = 10966 seconds = 3:02:46.

Second example: a 60-year-old woman runs a 10K in 0:55:00. Her age standard is 0:36:45, giving 66.8% (Developing) and an age-graded time of 0:43:03.

Third example, this one landing in a named performance band: a 45-year-old man runs the marathon in 2:50:00. His age standard is 2:08:39, giving 75.7% -- Local class, the lowest of the four named bands in the table below.

What does "age grade" mean?

Where do the standards come from?

The USATF Masters Long Distance Running Council's road age-grading standards, compiled by Alan Jones and approved January 10, 2025 (road standards workbook version 2025-07-27, public domain / CC0). These are the standards USATF and most masters running calculators currently use for road events; WMA's own separate track & field factor tables were last revised in 2023. Every age (20 through 90) and both sexes are pulled directly from the published per-age cells, with nothing interpolated or estimated.

What's the "age-graded time"?

Your finish time rescaled to what it would be worth at open class (the peak, roughly-20s standard) -- actual time x (open standard / age standard). It lets you compare a masters performance directly against an open racer's time at face value. A 60-year-old woman running a 10K in 0:55:00 (66.8%, Developing) age-grades to 0:43:03.

Why does the "open" standard vary slightly by event and sex?

The age standard isn't a smooth curve with a peak fixed at one age -- the published data shows the true fastest age varies a little by event and sex (for example, the women's marathon standard is fastest at ages 26-27, not 25). This calculator uses the actual fastest published standard for each event and sex as the open-class baseline, rather than assuming a fixed peak age.

What do the performance levels mean?

World class is 100% or higher (matching or beating the age standard), national class 90-99.9%, regional class 80-89.9%, and local class 70-79.9% -- the standard bands used alongside WMA/USATF age-grading tables. Most recreational masters runners score somewhere in the 50-70% range; competitive club runners often reach 60-75%.
