METs by speed and incline

A MET is a multiple of resting metabolism (3.5 ml O₂ per kg per minute). It is the weight-independent way to compare workouts: 6 mph flat is about 10.2 METs whoever is running.

The equations

  • Walking: VO₂ (ml/kg/min) = 3.5 + 0.1 × speed (m/min) + 1.8 × speed × grade.
  • Running: VO₂ = 3.5 + 0.2 × speed + 0.9 × speed × grade.
  • Calories: VO₂ × weight (kg) ÷ 1000 = litres of oxygen per minute; × 5 kcal per litre; × minutes. Subtract the resting 3.5 for net.
  • Example: 160 lb (72.6 kg), 6.0 mph (160.9 m/min), 1%, 30 min. VO₂ = 3.5 + 32.2 + 1.45 = 37.1; × 72.6 ÷ 1000 × 5 = 13.5 kcal/min; × 30 = 404 gross, about 366 net.

The equations assume steady-state effort on a calibrated belt. Holding the handrails can cut the real cost by 20-30%, especially on an incline; the calculator cannot see your hands.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many calories does 30 minutes on a treadmill burn?

For a 160 lb person: walking at 3.5 mph on the flat about 102 kcal net; the same walk at 5% incline about 194; running at 6 mph about 350. Weight scales all of these directly: a 200 lb person burns 25% more.

Is the treadmill's calorie readout accurate?

Usually not. Consoles that don't ask your weight assume 150-160 lb; most report gross calories (including what you would have burned resting); and several studies have found commercial machines overstate by 10-20% or more. The ACSM equations used here are the ones exercise physiologists use to estimate energy cost from speed and grade.

Gross or net -- which number should I use?

Net, if the question is 'what did this workout add'. Gross includes your resting metabolism for those minutes (about 1 kcal per kg per hour), which you would have burned on the couch. Fitness trackers and consoles typically show gross, which is why their numbers look bigger.

Does incline really burn that much more?

Yes, and more so walking at 3.5 mph on a 10% grade is about 8.5 METs, roughly the cost of jogging on the flat at 5 mph (about 8.7 METs).

Why does the calculator switch equations at 5 mph?

The ACSM walking equation is validated up to about 3.7 mph and the running one from about 5 mph; between them, both are approximations. Most people break into a run somewhere around 4.5-5 mph, so the calculator switches at 5.0 mph (134 m/min) unless you override it.
